You receive a text from Amazon, or maybe Costco, or evel Walmart, stating that a product you ordered has been recalled, and a link to login. Well, you want to know more about it - you don’t remember what it is, after all - so you do.

Bizarrely, once you’ve logged in, there seems to be no such recall. You close out the tab, thinking there was some mistake.

Later on, you notice that you’re getting charges on your card, and seeing orders you never made. You finally realize that you’ve given your Amazon login details to a scammer.

How to protect yourself
Always log in from the site’s actual login page instead of following the link. Never trust a link in a text message.

Note that usually recalls are along the lines of “please stop using the product”, though companies migh also offer you a way to get your money back, through the manufacturer or similar.
