This scam starts simple. A person with a Facebook Business page gets an email from a famous podcaster (or their company) with a request for an interview. The sender of the email, often a business manager, talks about the person’s work and why the famous person wants them on their podcast. Sometimes - often - money is offered. The podcast takes place on Facebook Live. Once the person agrees, a zoom call is arranged to set things up.
The manager at the end of the Zoom call doesn’t show their face, but insists that, to link/monetize the accounts, the famous person’s company has to have admin access to the person’s Facebook page.
Once the administrative access is given, the scammer swiftly works to kick the original person off the page, then turns the page into a scam site, often for crypto. The original owner may or may not ever get access back.
How to protect yourself
First of all, never, ever give a person admin access to your Facebook Business page unless you know them well!
Especially don’t give it to a random person who won’t even show their face on Zoom or similar.
Also, be aware that anybody worth anything has their own custom domain. They will not be using GMail or any other free service.
The initial email is likely run through AI to hide any wonky English and to convince you that they know about what you do to make the request more compelling; especially for minor media creators. Research before you commit to anything.
