This week I want to talk about a scam that could get you in legal trouble, but didn’t exactly fit my normal format. Maybe someday it will.
I ran across a post on the Scams subreddit where someone was looking at a recruiter job, for AI training. Trouble was, either they or the people they recruited had to leave a laptop on, connected, and allow remote access 100% of the time.
Now, if you’re in my field, you might recognize this for what it is. Someone, usually in North Korea, wants to assume another person’s identity and work under their name. Sometimes this is just to farm more money, but other times the idea is to steal data from companies, or even require a ransom.
It’s for this reason that doing this is illegal, even if you don’t intend to do so; just like you need to be careful about “jobs” that require you to reship items or transfer money (parcel mules). You’re aiding and abetting a criminal act.
