So, I promised last week I’d get to the scam known as Pig Butchering.
A family member of a colleague of mine fell prey to the non-romantic version of this scam - they have a cat, post a lot about it on their social media, and a scammer used that to connect to them. The scammer was quite clever, and even though this person was close to said colleague, the scammer convinced them to keep it on the down low.
Fortunately for them, my colleague had connections and the family member fessed up quickly, so they have a chance of recovering their money.
Most victims of this scam aren’t so lucky.
In any case, I filed this under both the name “Hybrid Investment Scam” (the more generic, less victim-blaming name) and “Pig Butchering” (the commonly known name), which effectively puts it twice in my scam listing, but I figured better twice than not at all!
