Okay, I tried one of the more mainstream dating apps - which one I won’t mention, mostly because I don’t remember. I remember being less than impressed by the options and suspicious of the profiles, even before I knew what catfishing was.
This one caught my attention because of what seems to be a scam dating app that uses AI for the fake women (and it’s almost always women - you rarely see women or gay men falling prey). A bit of digging into the topic revealed a pre-Covid AMA from a young woman who worked for one of these scam websites before being fired (apparently for doing the low-income stuff like texting instead of the high-income activities).
Scams related to love and friendship are common. Chances are some news program in your area or country has done a report on the Pig Butchering scam, where scammers gradually entice victims into investing on fake cryptocurrency websites.
Things are going to get worse for those of us in the U.S. with the new administration’s love of cryptocurrency - I’m not against the idea of crypto, but it’s a complex topic that I’m not going to cover today.
