Hitting up r/scams to see what scams are coming through is always interesting. This week’s came up and I remembered I hadn’t covered it yet. It’s a heartbreaking one because you want to make sure your kid is okay, you know? And scammers, lowly scumbags that they are, know that.
My family’s definitely using the codeword/password deal to prevent things like this happening to us.
I’ve mentioned here before that sometimes things come up that seem to be scams, but turn out to be something else. Someone fatfingering their number for a signup is not a scam. Happens all the time. If you owe a legit debt within the statue of limitations and a debt collection agency is calling you about it, their behavior might be scummy but it’s not a scam. (After educating myself on the subject, I absolutely hate the scumbags that try to collect zombie debt.)
And then you get things like the post I read today, where someone’s friend was invited to fly to another state to meet “influencers” on a platform they were supposed to be hired to chat on. It was… well, it’s not every day that people in the comments section point out that this was a bit more criminal than the typical scam - as in while most scams are bad (some people performing scams like the Pig Butchering scams are actually enslaved), this went to the level of possible Human Trafficking.
Yeah, that bad.
Always be careful about your safety. Don’t go places with people unless you have known them for a while.
