Welcome to the Calconncet Scam & Phishing Education Pages!
Scams have been around as long as humans have. They change in form, especially as society or technology changes, but it all boils down to the simple idea that some would rather cheat another person out of their money than earn that money in an honest way. Nowadays that might involve stealing an account, or an identity, or even technology. But it all comes down to one thing: greed.
This site is intended to educate people on common and even some uncommon scams of today. Some of them are newer; some of them are not. A lot of them are internet-based (because those are the ones that show up on the various sites I follow), but versions of them have been around for a long, long time.
Because there is such a wide variety of scams, this is not meant to be comprehensive. But I’m hoping to cover enough of these scams so that a visitor can get familiar with them. Many of these were drawn from the subreddit r/scams and similar.
Phishing has some of the same goals as scamming and can be considered almost a subset, so some common phishing attacks will also be covered here.
Let’s break them down into groups:
Sexstortion scams (getting threatened over an escort, an underaged person, or a hack involving porn)
Social media account takeovers (what are those six-digit numbers for anyway?)
Discord and Steam account takeovers (wherein someone ‘accidentally’ reported the wrong account)
Wrong number scams (mostly involving friendly young women who want to get to know you)
Scams targeting buyers, including renters (is that price too good to be true?)
Scams targeting sellers, including service providers (do they want to send a courier with a check?)
Scams targeting job seekers and similar (where the salary seems too good to be true, or maybe the job seems a bit skeevy)
Scams targeting businesses and social media influencers (why are you being asked to sign in to see a document? is this sponsorship real? Did my CEO want me to buy gift cards or send them an aging report?)
Package scams (did a delivery service tell me my address was incomplete?)
Fake romantic and platonic partners (does this person on the dating platform really exist?)
Legal scams (process servers, law enforcement officers, and missed jury duty, oh my!)
Debt-related scams (do you really owe this debt? is it too old?)
Scams involving friends, family members and inheritances (did you really inherit money? is your grandkid being tortured? have they been in an accident or need bail?)
Stolen iPhones (or why you should not ever remove “Find My” from a stolen iPhone)
In-person scams (where someone needs bus fare, gas money, or something else while they’re right in front of you)
